A very hot summer

Usually in WA we do have a few days of hot summer weather but a stretch of rainy days still occur in between. This year it looks as if the NY summer is taking a vacation here and the WA summer decided to visit NY. We are eating huge amounts of Otter pops all the fans are on and the children and I stay in the relatively cool house most of the time at least when the temperature reaches almost 100 degrees.
I am glad I have a big library of project books and magazines to keep us all entertained. When Finn was little I started buying the Martha Stewart Kids magazines. Lucky me because they are very full of fantastic ideas and now they are almost collector items.
Another book I bought a few months ago was Green Crafts for Children. I can highly recommend
this book. All of the projects use items you most likely already have available in the house or are easy to come by and do not cost a fortune.

Some of the projects we have made so far are these adorable slippers. The girls had so much fun making the slippers and they are surprisingly sturdy!

Also look at these felt beads. They look like colorful, miniature jellyrolls. When the girls wear the necklaces we always get compliments :)

With this unusual heat Ella ran out of cool things to wear. I remembered watching Heather Ross on the Martha Stewart show were she demonstrated how to make this super cute Sundress. Watch the video here.
Somehow I messed up the shirring but the little dress was still done in 30 Min and it is Ella's favorite up to date. Go figure... the simplest dress.

Incidentally on Wednesday the rest of Far Far Away should ship. So toward the end of the week I should have the complete collection again.

I hope all of you are having a great time being crafty!

I really couldn't help myself.. I just had to sew

I count myself very lucky... I have a husband who lets me be on the weekends. He takes over the household, the children and the dog all so that I can sit and sew until my sewing machine is smoking and my serger makes funny clicking sounds. It is (next to my occasional adventures in painting, to all my friends from the past I hang my head in shame) the only time were I can just have my thoughts to myself and it is bliss. If this bliss is combined with simple joy because I know what I am creating is beautiful, it is a priceless feeling.
I really, really love the colors and designs of Mezzanine. Plus Sophie and Sydney were so easy! Patty Young really understands how to give the home seamstress instructions that are not confusing and to the point. Beginners will love her patterns. At least that's what I thought as I was cutting and sewing.

The shirt is a combination of Mezzanine and Stenzo. I think they go really well together and I used Patty's idea and combined all with a denim. I made Sydney in the hooded shirt version in a 5T (Romy is 4 1/2) it's a bit big, but I like it that way. In the colder months Romy can wear it layered.

Please excuse the dead grass. It is very hot here at the moment and we are conserving water.

The Sophie pants are the ViewB version that you can also see on the Kyoto pattern. These I made in 4T and they fit perfect. Romy is very slender. Ella is heavier so I would advise to definitely measure your child to make sure they won't be too tight around the hips as the pattern seams to be slim fitted.

All in all I am giving Mezzanine two huge thumbs up and Modkid patterns as well!!

Mezzanine has started to arrive and a pattern SALE!

Mezzanine has started to arrive. The bolts are all very, very beautiful!! I like that Patty's new line is perfect for summer sewing, but would absolutely also work for the upcoming seasons.

Also I am having a SALE on all of my patterns. The sale will go on until 07/24/09.

I am a bit in a frenzy trying to work and entertain the children. I swear, I never know how to survive over the summer break... How do all your working Moms and stay at home Mothers do it?

OK off for another coffee refill!!!

Lantern Bloom By Laura Gunn

I am so glad that I have decided and was able to order this beautiful line by Laura Gunn for Michael Miller fabrics. Every bolt is truly a work of art. The designs are contemporary and the hues vibrant in orange, lime (citron), aqua, turquoise and green. I love that Laura Gunn was able to show that she is a painter by trade, by keeping the brush strokes in her textile designs alive.
You can find the Lantern Bloom here.

I have also ordered a few rolls of bias tape. I was almost out :)
